Sound for Classrooms and Non-profits

Quality sound does not always call for crazy amounts of cash to be spent. Here is a list for the basic PA system parts that will have you functioning trouble free for a long while. You can scale from a small room of 30 people to a room of 100-200 people with the kits put together. (Links are in Bold)

Microphone basics:

It's good to start off with a vocal mic that is a time tested workhorse that can survive the bumps and bruises of everyday use. The Shure SM57 and SM58 are the two mics that come to mind for most roadies and musicians because the value and proven reliability. The 57 is a great general use mic to capture sound from guitar cabs, instruments, drums, and can even be used for vocals as well. The 58 has the same internals as the 57 but with a different grill design (the ice cream cone looking one).

Kits and combos to start....

Here is the SM58 combo to start. It includes the SM58s (has on/off switch), a microphone bag for up to 4 mics, an XLR cable, and a polishing cloth. You can get it here on Amazon

Next is the SM57 combo. It includes the SM57LC (no on/off switch, a mic stand, and XLR cable. You can get it here on Amazon

Now build on from the kits by buying the individual mics to add to the kits:

SM57 and SM58

Speaker systems:

For a smaller room workshops (up to 40 people) or instruction with a need for portable reinforcement go with the:

Mackie SRM150 5.25-Inch Compact Active PA System, Black

For medium rooms and audiences (50-150 people) the QSC sounds pristine and is fairly portable and the Mackie Thump is the best bang for the buck. For anything over 100 people then you can pair them up and add a mixing board. Otherwise, you can plug straight into the powered speakers with the right cables and adapters.
